Chapter 33

“What do you mean?” asked Beryl.

“Suppose I provided you with a way to leave this life and start fresh somewhere—and sometime—else?”

“But you would change history.”

“Would I? In my world, you disappeared in 1933. If you still disappear in 1933, am I changing the past?”

“Are you saying that I will disappear no matter what?” asked Beryl.

“Maybe. Maybe you are destined to disappear in 1933. But is how you disappear destined?”

“Uh…”

“We’re still learning about this. Maybe some things don’t change, no matter what. Or maybe your disappearance resulted from me going back in time. Maybe it didn’t. What I’m getting at is this: We don’t know why you disappear. Maybe if I never showed up, one of your gangster friends would kill you and dispose of your body. Because I showed up, maybe you still disappear, but with a different option … or outcome. So we’re not changing history, because history has you disappearing. I know the exact date that you are reported missing. If you leave on that date, it changes nothing historically.”

“So what’s your idea?”

“Unfortunately, in this time period, there aren’t a lot of portals to choose from. Most take you too far back in time. But there is one portal that takes you back to 1870 in Arizona. If you’re willing to start a new life, that’s one option.”

“So I could be killed by gangsters if I stay or gunslingers if I go.”

They both laughed.

“It’s just something to consider,” he said. “I’ll drive to Flagstaff to check it out. I will write down precise directions to the location, in case you decide to go.”

Beryl took his hand. “From what you’re saying, it sounds like you are not planning to stay here.”

“I can stay a week or two, but believe it or not, I am working. I have a few more places to visit and document for the people back home. But…” he hesitated. “When I finish with those, I was considering checking out Hollow Rock, Arizona, of the 1870s. If you decide to escape your enemies here, you might find me coming to Hollow Rock.”

“If I decide to go, I’ll look for you,” said Beryl tenderly.
